Aseptic miecrosis of the femnoral capital epiphysis has beemi reported by Smit.h and Comiley5 to) o’cuir frequently in the gehietic variants of sickle cell amiemnia. In this report, the complete absemice of this lesiomi in their patients with sickle cell anemia was stressed. Several cases showing femoral head lesiomis amid presumned to represent. true sickle cell anemia have been reported,6’6 but these were miot. verified electrophoreticably, nor were the clinical and hematologic data sufficiehit to make a definite climiical diagmiosis of sickle cell anemia as distimict fromin its genetic variamits. It is our purpose to present six patients with sickle cell amiemiiia (homozygous S) proven by paper clect.rophoresis who demonstrated aseptic necrosis of the femnoral head.

Femoral Head Avascular Necrosis in Heterozygous Sickle Haemoglobin, the Role of Parenteral Drug Abuse: A Case Report
Sickle cell trait is a benign haemoglobin disorder which rarely results in disease or complications. A few cases of osteonecrosis have been reported in the literature in parts of the world with advanced health care system. There are various predispositions to developing avascular necrosis in general, while the sickle beta globin gene inheritance is the most efficient factor. Injection drug abus...
متن کاملAvascular necrosis of the femoral head among children and adolescents with sickle cell disease in Greece.
Hemoglobinopathies are very common in Greece, the incidence of beta-thalassemia trait being 8% and that of sickle cell trait ranging from 1 to 32% in various districts. In Greek populations, sickle cell disease (SCD) is mainly represented by S-beta thalassemia.
متن کاملSteady state hemoglobin concentration and packed cell volume in homozygous sickle cell disease patients in Lagos, Nigeria
Background: Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder of hemoglobin causing myriad of pathology including anemia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the baseline values of steady state hemoglobin and packed cell volume as a guide to managing the early recognition of hemolytic crises in sickle cell anemia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the sickle cell patients atte...

BACKGROUND Sickle cell anemia is an inflammatory disease and is characterized by chronic hemolysis. We sought to evaluate the association of lactate dehydrogenase levels with specific clinical phenotypes and laboratory variables in patients with sickle cell anemia. METHODS The present cross-sectional study was conducted in Sickle Cell Centre of Yolo in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Con...
متن کاملLevel of Hemoglobin F and Gg Gene Expression in Sickle Cell Disease and Their Association with Haplotype and XmnI Polymorphic Site in South of Iran
Background: Molecular genetic factors regulating hemoglobin F (Hb F) expression are important modifiers of the severity of sickle cell anemia (SS). Methods: The prevalence of XmnI polymorphic site, the Gg:Ag ratio and the Hb F level were determined using PCR-RFLP procedure, HPLC and alkaline denaturation method, respectively, in various haplotypes of 52 patients with SS, 18 patients with sickle...
